Changing of the guard, Athens

We had a bit of a trip to Athens, which is something we have been meaning to for a while, just this time it seemed cheap enough, though we did have to take flights that arrived close to midnight (if they were on time) which is the only down side.

The weather as you can see from the image (and the man in the middle) was a little bit hot -at least for a UK resident- at 30 degrees celsius, and didn’t drop much below 25. I mean don’t get me wrong, that’s better than what we’re getting now we’re back which is rainy 12 degrees if you’re lucky, dropping to 10. Unfortunately I wasn’t able to get the air-con working until Thursday so for me, I sweated 24h a day.

Anyway, that’s enough if my heat issues. The changing of the guard at the Greek Parliament was pretty impressive, all performative of course with their clicky steel toed shoes. You were so close to them which was a little surprising though there was an invisible barrier. Try and cross it and and you get hauled into line by the soldier in modern military get up… politely of course.

It’s well worth a visit as it’s easy to get around as the metro is cheap and easy to get around and the tickets seem to work on the overground, busses and trams I believe, though we only used it on the metro and overground. Oh and they have trolley busses as well, which is an oddity you don’t see much outside the Trollybus Museum in Doncaster.

Of course as well as seeing these guys sweat though their uniform, there’s the Acropolis, the temple of Zeus, the two Agoras and a ton of museums to see, and pretty good for a long weekend. And the food isn’t bad if you like eating meat for every meal.
